A Love of Travel: Warning! Disney World Can Be Hazardous To Your Health...

WARNING: DISNEY WORLD CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH...

that is if you have only 4 adults and 3 children in strollers who are three and under as we did in May. Each time we got on the transportation to the resort we had to fold the strollers (2), carry each kid, the diaper bag, the cooler with snacks, and the camera case. The strollers and kids were reassembled on arrival at the next place.

You need a lot of time, and in some cases, a lot of patience and fortitude to plan a successful Disney visit.

This year, all the passes and packages have changed. Some parks open early, some stay open late and sometimes there are special events in conjunction with the early opening or late closing. It involves a lot of strategic planning and we were all taking notes for two months prior to the trip. Even though I have been to Disney World at least 15 times, and sold trips over the years to many clients, it was a learning curve.

We wanted to insure that Ethan (1) Abigail (3) and Kayla (1) got the most out of their four days. We went to every Princess meal and Pooh breakfast possible, and they all require reservations way in advance or they book up. They are not cheap either. We put the twins in the large beds as they did not want to sleep in the pack'n'plays Disney provides. (only 1 per room) We put chairs against the side of the bed so they would not fall. We were able to get adjoining rooms with 2 large beds each, so Ethan slept in our room.

Abigail who is 3 did fall out of the bed and got a nasty bruise on her nose (we later found out that they have bed rails), and she sleeps in a bed without bedrails at home.

One park per day is enough for little ones' parents who have to negotiate getting all the strollers and paraphernalia from one park to the next.

By the fourth day we just sort of sat around Epcot after our 10:00 Princess breakfast, too tired to take the kids in and out of the strollers any more.

By the way, bring an umbrella and ponchos so you won't be forced to buy the pricey ponchos (which resemble garbage bags with Mickey on them) Disney magically provides at the slightest drop of rain.

We suggest you stay longer than we did and allow the kids time for napping and unwinding in the pool.

The last visit, with our older son and family, we were at the Grand Floridian, before that the Buena Vista Palace, and now the All Star Movies (Abigail requested the Dalmatian Section.) All star was just fine, clean and nice for all the time we spent there. We also rented a fridge, basically to keep a $2.99 cream cheese cold for our morning bagels, bringing the total breakfast cost to about $47, $42.50 for the fridge, but it saved time, which made it worthwhile.

With the kids so young, there were shows and rides in each park they enjoyed even if they did not understand them. Even so, MGM and EPCOT could be eliminated for young children. Also, some attractions may scare little ones. Abigail was terrified by the 3D shows when objects seemed to fly out at her.

You need to devise a strategic plan at character meals. The character is at the table for a couple of minutes, and it is a challenge to get the autograph book signed and snap a picture (and a video) with all three kids looking in the right direction.

We're not complaining. We loved being with the children and now that they're back in Ohio we wish we were all back at Disneyworld together.

Many happy returns,

Today, Marci Zied of A Love of Travel will share about the affordable wedding options available in Jamaica, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

More and more couples are planning weddings in Jamaica, Hawaii, Mexico and other places, especially in the Caribbean. The bulk of them are going to Jamaica because of reasonable prices for both the wedding and the guests who attend. Many are going to Mexico as well. In both places free weddings (often after a small government tax) are available. They also offer vow renewals for special anniversaries such as a 50th wedding anniversary.

A Love of Travel helps couples plan WeddingMoons, where the entire family travels to a reasonably priced destination. At one time, most of the people doing a Weddingmoon were married previously. For some, especially divorced couples, they did not want the same destination where they had the original honeymoon.

That has changed and young people marrying for the first time understand the value of having the people who they care most about and who care the most about them in an intimate setting.

We had a big, expensive wedding for our daughter and son-in-law with a large champagne and hors de oeuvres reception in a beautiful social hall next to the sanctuary. Then, we went to a Westin Hotel ballroom for a sit down dinner after the bride and groom arrived by horse drawn carriage. Most of the people that attended, are people that we have lost touch with and never see.

It would have been so special to know that the people who came cared enough about the couple to incorporate their wedding with their family vacation.

The most popular resorts for this type of thing are couples only resorts like Sandals since they are closely allied with sister properties like Beaches Resorts for couples, singles and families.

June 24 my husband, Ernie and I (I have to take my accountant on my trips) will attend a destination wedding in Jamaica. The couple originally wanted Nassau at Sandals Royal Bahamian. After I scouted the various properties in person, we decided that Beaches Negril would better suit their needs, continuing the honeymoon at Sandals Whitehouse afterwards. Beaches enabled them to have guests at no additional charge who were not couples. Some guests opted to stay at Sandals Negril, a couples only resort with complimentary privileges at Beaches only 5 minutes away. Those staying at other resorts must pay a fee to come to the wedding at Sandals or Beaches.

Resorts in Mexico are also reasonably priced. However, there are none that I know of that are couples only. Some are adults only, which are preferable for honeymooners. People with children have to stay somewhere else and in some cases can pay a fee to attend the wedding.. Most are all inclusive resorts.

In most of the Caribbean, you need to be in the country at least 2 days before the wedding. In St. Lucia it is 3 business days.

Weddings are free at several resorts, including Sandals and Beaches, which require that the bride and groom stay a certain number of nights to qualify. A few small amenities are included like a bouquet and boutonniere, an official or minister, legal documents, a small cake, and in most resorts a small reception for a handful of guests, including champagne and canapes or hors de oeuvres

Usually there are items that are optional at a cost such as photos, music, etc., etc., etc.

Some brides have even embellished their wedding with a wedding in a box (silk floral arrangements from a local florist to take along). They can even be designed in such a way that they can be given as keepsakes for some or all of the guests to take them home (so the bride need not cart them back).

Recently a bride ordered free "save the date" invitations to let people know about the wedding and who to contact to make arrangements to come.

The biggest obstacle is finding a place reasonably priced, especially for guests, without additional costs, and a place where the bride and groom can also have a romantic honeymoon after the guests leave.

Another obstacle is the family wanting the wedding at their church with their friends and business associates. Some people are offended that they will have to spend money to come to a wedding. However, those who love them the most will be delighted as we were when we were invited by this client couple in June, Bryan Edmondson and Amy Daddino. Even though it will take us out of the office and cost money, we know it will be a warm loving experience and one that we all will remember for a long time.

Many Happy Returns,

Dear Friends:
Are you experiencing frustration in your effort to plan a vacation this summer? Peak travel times such as summertime are heavily booked up 3 or 4 months in advance. Family-sized suites, cruise cabins for more than two people are harder or impossible to find the later you book.

There is a myth that there are last minute specials all the time. However, there are limited accommodations, perhaps the room type is sold out, there are not enough seats on preferred flights, or the ship has closed reservations for over two in a cabin.

What are your options? Well a cruise is probably more abundant than anything else, especially if you can take two cabins for your family and they do not have to connect. Seven day cruises from Miami or Fort Lauderdale are your best bet. Universal Florida or Disney World are options. If your preferred rooms are not available, there are great places offfsite that are usually available with free shuttles (about a 10 minute ride) to the resorts.

One family had never stayed anywhere at Disney World except the upscale Grand Floridian. Unfortunately they booked late for Spring break and nothing on site was available. They went to an off site property 2 miles away. When they returned they said it was great. For about a third of the rate they had more room, a refrigerator and microwave, and VIP service. The only thing not included was the meals at the park. Also, when you stay off site and have passes included, any unused portion does not expir and can be used at another time. If you can find rooms on site, you can get a dream maker that includes either 2 or 3 meals per day, or other park services, or merchandise (limited to certain items). We did get the dream maker when we went in April and found the dining options and menus exceptional.

Late booking to Mexico may be a good choice on scheduled air rather than charters, especially on midweek flights. Canada is also a good choice. It is one of my favorite countries to visit for its beauty, interesting cities and abundant recreation. Where else can you find elk grazing next to your hotel entrance?

If you are traveling with other families or with friends, you may have to choose different flights and room accommodations

Good luck with your summer plans. Now is the best time to book those school breaks in the Fall and holiday weeks. That will insure the best choices and price.

Many Happy Returns
